THE next Family Chess morning at the Discovery Centre (Library) will be held on Saturday October 26 from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

The event is free and all are welcome from beginner to grandmaster.

Basingstoke Juniors had a good day at the Hampshire Junior Chess Congress held at Winchester College.

Edison Brown took the first place in the under-eight section with the perfect score of six out of six.

Regular solid performer Ted Mayne scored four out of six in the very tough under 10 section.

Jay Negargar could have played in the under-12 section but elected to play in the under-14’s where he scored a very creditable three out of six.

Basingstoke Juniors playing in their first Congress’s all posted decent scores.

Edward Yan recorded 2½ and Chinmay Joharle three in their respective sections and Sammy Sunny recorded 3½ points which was enough to secure him an invite to the London Juniors Congress in December.

Basingstoke Chess Club teams have made a decent start to the season in their various league competitions.

In the Borders League Division Two, the A team have won their opening two matches.

The latest win was a 3½-1½ win at Woking A.

The points came via wins from Ivan Stipcevic, Mo Negargar and David Graham plus a draw by Steven Jones.

In the Division Three the B team recorded a 4½-½ win over Crowthorne B at home.

The points were scored by Raja Pentakota, Jamie Chilton, John Shaddick and Malcolm Cooper plus a draw from Negargar.

The Southampton League side bowed out of a cup competition to Salisbury C. However they picked up a point at Chandler’s Ford D in their first League Division Five fixture with a 2-2 draw. The points came from wins by Philip Ware and Adam Matthews.
