ODIHAM tennis ace Ryan Golesworthy retained his Junior National Tennis Championship under-18 Boys Doubles title at the Nottingham Tennis Centre

Last year's Golesworthy won the crown with Scotland’s James MacKinlay), this time around he was paired with Leicestershire’s Alex Solonenko.

The pair have had a blistering year, winning back to back titles at the Grade 2 National Doubles Championships and were hungry for more success.

Their first match sawa 6-0, 6-1 success over Joe Leather (Avon) and Thomas Smart (Yorkshire).

In the semi final the number two seeds faced Golesworthy’s West Hants Club teammate, Luca Mcmanus (Dorset) and Matt Doe (Essex) which wa sa lot closer as it finished 6-3, 6-4.

In the final Golesworthy and Solonenko were up against the number one seeds from Yorkshire, Johannus Monday and Finn Murgett.

The final saw some of the most entertaining moments at the Nationals, with the players finding amazing angles, an array of aces, and flashes of sheer brilliance.

Golesworthy and Solonenko were a break up at 3-2 but the number one seeds battled hard and took the first set 6-3.

In the second set Golesworthy and Solonenko came out firing, took a crucial lead and ran away with the set 6-2.

This forced the match to a deciding third set 10 point tiebreaker.

Monday and Murgett thundered to a 9-6 lead. Golesworthy and Solonenko made a stunning comeback, digging in their heels and saving three match points and in the end won it 13-11

On winning his second Junior Nationals title, Golesworthy said: "Retaining the title wasn’t easy. Losing the first set was tough but we focussed on ourselves, on what we should be doing better.

"We always have confidence in each other and that’s incredibly important for a doubles team.

He added: "Alex and I have a bit of banter on court, enjoy ourselves but we never give up and that’s what gets you through the difficult points.”
