OLD Basing Tennis Club held its annual Summer Tournament Finals’ Day on September 7, writes LYNNE THOMAS.

Matches started at noon and finished at 4.00pm, when finalists and runners up were presented with their trophies by Mike Sant, President of the club.

The Men’s Singles between James Chamberlin and Jamie Thomas, saw some great serving and cross court rallies throughout, with Thomas retaining his title winning 6-1 6-4.

The Ladies’ Singles final’s result did not reflect the close games and long rallies, as Penny Luke beat Jane Hatter 6-2 6-0 to defend her title.

The Men’s Doubles was a great match, with lots of rallies and great net play in a match which saw James Chamberlin and Ben Wiltshire up against Andy Mountford and Jamie Thomas.

All four men had great reactions and the match was very entertaining to watch, with Mountfield and Thomas retaining their crown 6-4, 6-2.

The Ladies’ Doubles score did not reflect the closeness of the final score of 6-2, 6-1.

There were many deuces and long rallies but in the end Penny Luke and Jane Hatter defended their title successfully beating Bev Cleaver and Carol Torselli.

The Mixed Doubles was a close match as Jamie Thomas partnered his mum, Lynne Thomas against James Chamberlin and Jane Hatter.

There were several breaks of serve, but in the end the Thomas combination won 6-4 6-3 and were delighted to win the title for the second year running.

This year the club ran a Singles Handicap Tournament, trying out a new format.

Players had to win 30 points to clinch a win.

In the Men’s Handicap both Nigel Hatt and Iain Armstrong started on 0.

The match was closely fought with lots of long rallies. In the end Nigel Hatt won 30-19.

In the Ladies’ Handicap final Bev Cleaver started on minus 10 and Jane Reap on 0.

Again, this was another match of rallies with Bev Cleaver coming through to win 30-22.

Each year the club presents the Betty Holmes Trophy to a member of the club who has contributed a lot to Old Basing Tennis Club over the years.

This year the trophy was presented to Bev Cleaver in recognition of all she has done for the club – including being A Team captain, planting flowers around the club house and helping to keep the club house and courts in good condition.
