A DISASTROUS final round in the Open Championship saw  Justin Rose's slim hopes of the title vanish.

The former Robert May's pupil started the day at Royal Portrush joint fourth, but seven shots behind leader and eventual winner Shane Lowry.

Ireland's Lowry claimed a first major championship win with a dominant six-shot victory on 15 under par amid raucous scenes.

With adverse weather forecast for final day the tee off times were moved forward, but this did not help the Englishman.

He shanked a shot almost sideways in the midst of the heavy rain while on the ninth, which saw him net a double bogey.

Rose picked up his only birdie of the round on the 12th, before ending with dropped three shots in his six holes, which saw him return to the clubhouse with an eight-over 79 to end one under and he finished tied 20th.

In the first three round Rose had carded 69, 67 and 68.
