STUART Armstrong and Jan Bednarek both have 2020 European Championship qualifiers today.

Midfielder Armstrong is expected to win his 12th cap for Scotland in Kazakhstan (3pm) and Poland defender Bednarek is aiming to continue his excellent form away to Austria (7.45pm).

Armstrong returned from the last international break in outstanding form after a brilliant all-round performances in back-to-back Nations League wins against Albania and Israel.

He followed those with a two-goal salvo at Fulham, albeit in a 3-2 defeat at Craven Cottage, and another fine goal in the 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United – Mark Hughes’ last game in charge.

Armstrong has not been a regular under Ralph Hasenhuttl and had to be content with a substitute’s role in the last two games at Manchester United and in the win against Spurs, when he won the free kick with which James Ward-Prowse struck the winner.

So he will be looking forward to the chance to start Scotland’s first-ever match against Kazakhstan in Astana this afternoon.

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson will miss the Group I opener but will join up with the team in San Marino on Friday, ahead of Sunday evening’s qualifier in Serravalle, after undergoing dental surgery.

Meanwhile, Bednarek has established himself as a Saints regular since winning the last of his eight caps in November.

The defender played more minutes for Poland than he did for Saints in his first 16 months with the club, after signing for £5.7m in July 2017.

They included four appearances in October and November when he was not selected at all by Mark Hughes. But the 22-year-old has been outstanding under Hasenhuttl, having been recalled for the Austrian’s first game in charge.

So the 22 year-old will be full of confidence when he takes on Austria in Vienna. Bednarek is also set to take on Latvia in Warsaw on Sunday evening.

Also in action tonight is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who plays a friendly for Denmark away to Kosovo at 6pm, but not alongside Jannik Vestergaard, who has been left out.

Hojbjerg also has a Euro 2020 qualifier on Tuesday night, away to Switzerland as does Mo Elyounoussi, for Norway at home to Sweden.

Meanwhile, Saints goalkeeper Angus Gunn is in the England U21 squad for tonight’s friendly against Poland U21 at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate.
