BASINGSTOKE Junior Chess Club player Daniel Yu joined 11 other England junior chess players for a friendship tournament of nine rounds with players from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Yu played in the under-12 section, where there were 24 players from the four countries.

After two days of tough competition, the Basingstoke player won the first place with a superb unbeaten record.

The young player won eight games and drew the other to finish with 8.5 points out of nine which was an outstanding achievement.

The second placed player managed to return just 6.5.

Yu has had great success over the past four years and in this time he has won the Basingstoke Junior Chess Championship and the West of England Junior Championship.

In the Delancey Schools competitions he has won the Mega Finals championship (Hampshire) for his age group.

He won the Giga Final (southern half of England) two years ago and only narrowly missed out on retaining the title in 2018 finishing second.
