THE Joseph family enjoyed double success on the evening as Caius Joseph won the Senior Mens crown and father Rafer Joseph picked up the Volunteer Coach award

Rafer took up coaching after a successful athletics career as decathlete though he still competes and holds his own at club level.

After competing at a high-level, he has acquired a vast knowledge of the technical events and in order to improve his knowledge he also qualified as a sports masseur.

Rafer said: “It really is totally surprise and a nice family double with Cairus winning as well as he deserved it.

Basingstoke and Mid Hants AC does exceptionally well. Of course my expertise is in the multi events, but we have a lot of talent at the club with a waiting list so we need more coaches. I am hoping I can be part of the coaching mentor system to bring more coaches into the club.”

Earlier in the evening Caius made it the second year running Basingstoke and Mid Hants AC won the Senior Mens award, following in the footsteps of Owen Richardson.

Joseph is a multi-event athlete who made his Great Britain international debut in 2018.

The 19-year-old also became the under-20 national indoor decathlon champion and he followed this up with silver in the outdoor national championships.

The teenager has set his sights of reaching 7,000 points this season and making the under-23 European Championships.

He said: “ I was not expecting this. Of course my parents (Rafer Joseph and Tracey Goddard) both went to the Commonwealth Games so I think it is in my genes. They really support and help me.

“Going to the Europeans last year was the high spot for me, but unfortunately I had to pull out after three events due to food poisoning.”

Second in the senior men’s category was kick boxer Rob Payne, who won British and European titles last year and has been selected to represent GB at this year’s World Championships.

Third spot went to Alex Bigg after successful first season in biathle and triathle with three European silver medals in biathle, triathle and biathle mixed relay.
