Saints have joked that Charlie Austin should step in to solve the Brexit crisis.

Following confirmation of VAR's introduction to next season's Premier League, five days after Austin's emotional post-match interview went viral, the official Southampton FC Twitter feed joined in the banter by suggesting the Saints striker should now negotiate his country's exit from the European Union.

After his goal was controversially ruled out during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Watford, Austin fumed: “We go on about VAR this, VAR that - help the officials out, clearly they need help.

“We play in the Premier League, the best league in the world, the most-watched league in the world, give them all the help they need because clearly they cost us two points today. It’s a joke.”

At a shareholders' meeting in London today, Premier League clubs agreed in principle to introduce Video Assistant Referees from next season, while the country's exit from the EU descended into chaos.

Saints responded by tweeting: "Changing the world one interview at a time! 😂 Fancy taking a look at #Brexit while you're at it, @chazaustin10? 👀 #saintsfc

Meanwhile, Saints legend Franny Benali is in favour of VAR's introduction to the Premier League.

He said: “Like a number of people I was a bit sceptical initially. I wondered how VAR would affect the time issue and how it slotted into the game.

“But given how Saints and other teams have been affected in such a big way it’s the right thing to do.

“Things went for and against us against Watford. They should have had a penalty before Charlie’s goal was disallowed but it’s funny how this has been confirmed so soon after his honest and frank response.

“VAR’s been trialled in various competitions and is used in other countries so it was almost inevitable that this decision would be made.

“There are still questions around it in terms of how decisions get relaid to the crowd

“But ultimately it gives the opportunity to get more decisions right than wrong and that’s a good thing.

“With so much more at stake in the Premier League, refereeing decisions have an even bigger effect.

“This will assist in getting more of them right.

“I feel sorry in some ways that it takes an element of that debate away.

“But it does add another layer of discussion for pundits and supporters, without answering every question.”
