A STOPPAGE time Sam Smart winner was enough for Basingstoke town to advance to the next round of the FA Trophy.

The match against Enfield Town looked destined to head to a replay until the Dragons striker netted in the closing minutes of the game to give them a 2-1 win at the Camrose.

Smart was a thorn in the visitor’s side throughout the game and could have given the Dragons the lead after just four minutes.

The forward was in on the Enfield goal only to be denied point blank by a fully stretched Joe Wright.

However, it was visitors who took the lead as Lewis Taaffe’s well-directed header went past keeper Colm McAdden’s left hand.

The Dragons looked to respond immediately but Sam Argent’s effort was deflected over the bar.

It took until the 66th minute, for Town to level when Smart’s angled cross cum-shot appeared to be safely gathered low down by Wright, but somehow the ball squirmed out of his grasp and over the line.

With a draw looking likely, Smart capitalised on a wayward Matt Johnson pass to slot home the winning goal.

Smart nearly rounded off his hat-trick, but a clever save from Wright kept the deficit to one.

Town will look to continue their winning run as they return to league action when they host Merthyr Town on Saturday, 17 November.
