THE monthly Family Chess morning will be held on Saturday November 24 at the Discovery Centre (Library), writes DAVID GRAHAM.

This month there will be a theme to celebrate the World Chess Championship match being held in London.

There will be a display providing details on the event plus information on previous World Championships including the infamous Fischer v Spassky match in Iceland.

In addition a display of memorabilia from Basingstoke Chess Club will be available for viewing.

This includes photo’s and information from years past on both adult and junior players plus teams. Other activities on the morning will be a problem solving competition and ‘lightning’ tourney’s with small prizes for the winners.

All are welcome and the session will last from 10.30am to 12.30 pm.

At the recent Hampshire Junior Chess Congress all five Basingstoke Junior players did well.

Pick of the bunch were Edison Brown who came third in the under 8’s with four points out of six.

Ted Mayne also notched up four out of six in the under 10’s and both players qualified for the forthcoming London Junior Congress.

Vir Dixit and Jay Negargar in their first Congress’s both posted good scores with Dixit getting three out of six and Jay Negargar two and a half out of six.

Bryan Vaz also had a solid Congress at the under 12’s.

The league season has started and overall the club teams have had a good start.

In the ultra tough Berkshire League Division One Basingstoke have lost one and drawn one. However, in the Borders League Division Three, Basingstoke A have started with three straight wins.

The B team have won one and lost one in Division Five and the C team started the season with a good 3-1 win at Guildford F.

In the Southampton League the team has made a decent start with two wins and one loss and are currently second in the league.

The Basingstoke Chess Club received a massive boost with the news that their application for funding to the Four Lanes Trust has been accepted.

This will provide a large screen to enable the ‘ChessforKids’ to be displayed to more of the club juniors.

Also two new demonstration boards will be purchased for the training of youngsters.
