BASINGSTOKE and North Hants made quick work of bottom placed side New Milton in time for them to watch England beat Sweden and book their place in the World Cup semi-final.

The visitors won the toss at May’s Bounty and were soon in trouble as David Griffiths (2-29) removed both openers with just 17 scored.

However, from there New Milton dug in and Raff Hussey (34) and Lee Beck (33) set about building the foundations for a big score.

The pair added 62 for third wicket, before Basingstoke skipper Mitch Stokes (4-16) parted them, as Beck was caught behind by Lawrence Benge.

This brought Toby Edwards to centre and he hit the only six of the innings in his score of seven, before being the fourth man out with the score on 87.

This was followed by a smart caught and bowled by Stokes, to get rid of Hussey making it 94-6.

Basingstoke’s century hero last week Sibonelo Makhanya, excelled with the ball as he took out the New Milton tail, on his way to 4-15, as the visitors were bowled out for 105.

The home side reply did not get off to a good start, as Ben Thane suffered a rare failure with the bat, being bowled for two by Lee Beck, However, Chris Froud (29) and Max Harsham (45) enjoyed a match winning partnership, as they added 73 for the second wicket.

Harsham was the second man out and the first of three wickets for Joshua Arnold. His excellent knock of 55 balls, included nine fours.

From 80-1 the home side then had a little wobble as they soon found themselves 90-5.

It was left to Craig Williamson (6) and Stokes (10) to see the Bountymen to victory in this Southern League Premier Division clash.

Today, Basingstoke are in Southern League T20 Cup action and return to league action on Saturday with a trip to Winchester to face St Cross.
