WINKLEBURY Junior School took recently took part in the Basingstoke Sports Hall Athletics Competition.

The competition is for a team of six girls and six boys in school years 5 and 6.

Each team member takes part in a sprint race, a throw, a jump and a relay team.

They took the first round at Cranbourne in their stride winning it with lots of fantastic performances from all the team and this secured their place in the Basingstoke finals.

The Basingstoke finals were held at Aldworth with seven other schools competing and two places at the Hampshire finals were up for grabs.

David Osei had an outstanding competition winning three events and coming third in the other event out of 16 competitors.

Charlie Whitehouse managed second in the majority of his events and Aimee Cooper and Jessica Potts were joint first in their sprint.

Both boys and girls 2x2 relay teams of Kenoe Lewis and David Osei and Jessica Potts and Aimee Cooper won.

Leo Chapman managed two third places, Keisha Essel a second and third, Acacia Hall second in her sprint and year 5s Philip Kakari, Amelia Penny and Khia Stubbs all produced personal bests in their events.

Ellis Parsons stepped into the team with just a week to practice his events replacing Harley Percival due to ill health.

The team decided that Harley Percival should be the captain for them so he was still a part of the team - a lovely example of their sportsmanship.

The final results were: Winklebury 395 points, St Mary's 362, St Johns 348, Bishopswood 330, Burnham Copse 320, Woolton Hill 307, St Bede's 55. St Martin's finished eighth with 196 points but were the small school winners.

The Hampshire finals were held at the Places Leisure Centre in Eastleigh where 16 schools from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight were competing meaning each event had 32 competitors.

There were some outstanding results from the Winklebury team - Jessica Potts won the girls speed bounce and was so good only one boy beat her score.

There were other top 10 results in the speed bounce Ellis Parsons was sixth, Amelia Penny 8th and David 10th. The 2x2 relay teams both managed 3rd places and in the individual sprints David Osei was 5th and Keisha Essel, Aimee Cooper and Kenoe Lewis were seventh.

Kenoe Lewis had a fantastic long jump competition coming first and Philip Kakari came 4th.

In the throwing events Charlie Whitehouse came 2nd with David in 8th in the chest push and Kenoe Lewis was fourth in the javelin with Acacia Hall seventh.

The other top 10 places came from Charlie Whitehouse, who was ninth in the triple jump.

Last year the Winklebury team achieved 11th place and this year this team finished in an absolutely amazing seventh place, just 12 points away from coming fifth, The boys team were fourth and the girls were tenth. St Mary's finished ninth.
