AFC Berg lifted their second trophy of the season after they beat Twentyten Reserves 1-0 in the final of the Basingstoke B Cup, writes PETER RAYNBIRD.

Ashley Elward scored the winner after 27 minutes of the contest.

It was Twentyten Reserves having the early chances when after just three minutes Tom Mole headed against the upright.

Dan Hancock, who is the leading scorer in the League with 21 goals, was right through and goalkeeper Torren Kirrage did well to clear and there were strong claims for a penalty when the goalkeeper rushed out to save when Hancock looked like scoring.

Berg improved and Kieran Alleyne broke clear twice and failed to beat the goalkeeper in one-on-ones.

The lone goal came in the 27th minute and was not really worthy of being the winner.

Elward was some 45 yards out when he tried a hopeful low effort, it looked easy for goalkeeper Adam Burridge, but the ball squirmed out of his hands and ended up in the net.

There was a couple of bookings, Tom Mole and Elward and in the end referee Bob Scotford dished out six cautions, although it was that sort of game and was played in the right spirit.

Carlos Gonzalez, who was only playing his second game back since a broken ankle in January, began to create openings, but in the 55th minute he headed a good chance over the bar from a Peter Lomax corner.

Soon after, he was right through and Burridge managed to tip over the bar.

Twentyten had a great chance to level in the 63rd minute when Hancock was right through but he sliced his shot wide.

It was Berg who began to have more of the ball with Gonzales at the head of their attacks when they had a good effort blocked by Darren Gary, who was to receive the man of the match award for his defending and all round performance.

Substitute Cullum Chilcott also figured in the late attacks by Berg with a header inches over the bar and Mark Howell also had an on target shot blocked for them. All in all Berg just about deserved their prize and now have the double of league and cup in their sights.

The cup and awards was presented by Jim Johnston, Life Vice President of the Basingstoke and District Football League.
