TOBY Jackson was Basingstoke Hockey men's hero with numerous great penalty saves as won a shoot-out, to secure a place in the last eight of the National Cup against Hampshire rivals Southampton last Sunday, writes BECKY DONALDSON.

However, it did not start well as poor discipline and decisions led to Basingstoke conceding from open play.

A formation change bolstered the attack and Danny Bowden poured forward to fire a pass at captain Dean Record whose smart deflection rifled home a top corner finish.

Southampton were allowed back in to the game and again went ahead in open play, but with five minutes to go, Record was on hand again to net a second deflection goal.

This meant that the game was decided on penalties and young Basingstoke goalkeeper Jackson made some great stops to send it into sudden death, where Graham Garrett-Lang scored the winner.

The previous day in a top-two clash as Basingstoke took on leaders Woking, looking to close the current points gap.

However, by half-time the Surrey side led 4-0.

With a changed formation, Basingstoke stepped up their game and with Grant Rouse sending home the ball from close range.

The thirds took on Blandford and Sturminster with early goals from Harrison Spicer and John Paul Vout, but it ended 2-2.

The Basingstoke Ladies enjoyed a 2-0 victory against local rivals Reading.

Despite some good saves from the Reading goalkeeper, Jo Bowden's well-placed follow up shot was unstoppable as Basingstoke went in at the break 1-0 up.

Reading started the second period the sharper of the two sides, but Basingstoke's defence soaked up the pressure and redoubled their efforts in attack, with Catriona Bausor scoring from a penalty corner for a 2-0 win.
