JAMES Roberts won the very popular Hartley Wintney Golf Club’s Open Stableford in a competition which attracted 121 entries.

Considering the unsettled weather that was thrown at the players over the two days there was some exceptional scoring.

Roberts finished with a fantastic 45 points, while three players followed him on 41 points, Tony Breedon, Andrew Grove and Dennis Smith.

Grove was second, Smith third and Breedon fourth after countback.

New member Josh Stanley was the man on form in the July nine hole stableford with a winning score of 21 points.

This was just one point better than a group of three players, Ken Hammond, Kevin Speakman and Andrew Bunton. Speakman just pipped the other two on countback to finish runner up.

Linda Turner and guest June Winter with 43 points won the Ladies Member Guest Day.

Wendy Pattison and guest Judy Wallis were second on count back, while Deirdrie Randall and guest Paula Oates were third with 42 points.

The Saturday Ladies stableford was won by Niki Orchard with 33 points ahead of Julie Rumsby second on 27 points.

The handicap saw a superb opening round from Chris Merrick who shot a nett 64 to lead by two from young Jack Beeken-Syme on nett 66, and by three from scratch leader Mark Chandler on nett 67.

One further back on nett 68 were Anthony Powell and Angus Walker, with Gary Scott, Ed Little, David Lince and Adrian Squibb all on nett 69.

The following day, Merrick held onto his lead, shooting a nett 73 for a total 137 and a two shot win.

In second place scorching through the field was Ben Cornwell with a fantastic nett 68 and a total of 139.

In third place showing his metal was Beeken-Syme who followed his nett 66 with a 74 and a total of 140, a really impressive performance from the young junior.

Two shots further back with a total of 142 were Kevin Pigney and Mick Davies who both shot under par nett second rounds to take fourth and fifth place respectively.
