SUPER striker Sam Argent of Hartley Wintney Football Club was on target once again as he picked up the Basingstoke Gazette Sports Personality of the Year award.

Once more this year the award was decided by readers votes and in a close contest, Argent just pipped Britain's strongest women Farah Fonseca to the title.

The 25-year-old from South Ham was described by the readers who voted for him, as a dedicated hard working player who inspires others as well as a natural leader from the front and an epic goal scorer.

Hartley captain Argent certainly knows where the net is as he scored 54 goals last season, and he has already reached this figure again this term.

Last season of course Hartley Wintney were Combined Counties League champions and they are currently over 20 points clear at the top looking certain to win back-to-back title.

He started his career at Southampton and has also played local football for Whitchurch and Basingstoke Town, but it is with the Row he has excelled.

Argent was surprised to win the award and said: "I must thank everyone who has voted for me. I am one player in a great team and we had a great year in 2016, with our run in the Vase as well as winning the league.

"We want to get the job done and win the title again. I may score a lot of goals, but this is because the guys around me create so many chances.

Argent's goal scoring exploits have not gone unnoticed in non league football, but the club captain is not going anywhere and added: "This is a great club both on an off the field. We get great support and we are all looking forward to getting promoted.
