TYLNEY Park professional Ben Cummings was on top form at the Basingstoke Golf Club Pro-Am last Thursday.

Cummings, who used to play at Basingstoke, made the most of his course knowledge to shoot an amazing six-under-par round of 64 to win by two shots.

Mark Bell (Surbiton Golf Studio) was second after posting 66 (-4), with Gary Stubbington (Hockley) a further shot back in third.

The winning team also made the most of more than a little local knowledge.

Having worked tirelessly to ensure that the course was in top shape for the event, head greenkeeper Colin Hutt and his deputy, Tom Smart, duly claimed the team prize, playing alongside James Moore, from event sponsors Farols. Bell was the group's allocated professional.

Their score of 127 was one better than the second-placed team, consisting of Shaun Hall (American Golf), Nick Andrews, Mike Lucas and Pete Harris. A total of five teams were a shot further back in third.

Prizes were on offer for anyone who shot a hole-in-one on the par-three holes. Nobody managed to win a £20,000 car by acing the the 162-yard 17th, but amateur Peter Price claimed a new set of Titleist irons by holing out at the 265-yard 12th.

The event raised plenty of cash for Sebastian's Action Trust, Dummer-based Riding for the Disabled and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

Three other north Hampshire professionals also competed. Home player Carl Crown shot a three-over-par round of 73 to finish one shot ahead of Weybrook Park's Andrew Cloke, with Test Valley's Ali Briggs a further two shots back.

Cummings had been the form player going into the event at Basingstoke, having won the Blacknest Golf and Country Club Pro-Am six days earlier.

Despite heavy rain, the Tylney Park player shot a two-under-par round of 67 to win by an impressive four shots, also leading his team to first place in that competition.

He was unable to make it three in a row at Blackmoor last Friday, finishing five off the lead with a two-over-par round of 71, but sits ninth on the Hampshire PGA Order of Merit.

Cloke was the top north Hampshire golfer at Blackmoor, leading his team to victory and claiming a share of third place with a level-par round of 69. Sherfield Oaks' Ryan Alexander shot 71 (+2), with Basingstoke GC's Danny Fisher carding 76 (+7).
