THREE Basingstoke ice hockey players Stuart Mogg, Daniel Lackey and Roberto Tambellini helped the Southampton University Spitfires team retain their British Universities Championships at Ice Sheffield.

Mogg was voted the best defenceman of the tournament, a position he started playing for the Bison during last season.

Forward Lackey finished second in the goal scoring charts with 10 goals from six games and Tambellini was join fourth with five goals.

The Spitfires beat the Cambridge Blues in the hotly contested final 3-2 and it was sweet revenge for Southampton's only defeat in the whole tournament during the group stages.

Tambellini scored the opening goal of the final shorthanded in the fifth minute, before the Blues equalised.

Lackey made it 2-1 assisted by Sampford and then Richard Facey a former Basingstoke junior scored the winner.

In the semi-finals the Spitfires shot down the St Andrews Typhoons 4-1 with Mogg and Lackey both scoring.

In the group stages of the competition, the Spitfires opened their campaign with a crushing 8-1victory over the Manchester Metrostars.

Tambellini led the scoring with four goals, Lackey netted twice and their a single strike from Mogg.

The second game saw a narrow 3-2 loss to the Cambridge Blues, as Mogg found the net again.

Southampton completed the group games with two further wins against the Edinburgh Eagles 4-0, in which Lackey grabbed a hat-trick.

The Basingstoke Buffalo forward then added another triple in the next game a 3-0 victory over the Nottingham Mavericks, which booked the Spitfires a place in the semi-finals.
