BASINGSTOKE Chess Club lost 5-1 to Reading A in the Premier Precision Cup, as Paul Hackman and Ewart Smith both drew their games.
Elsewhere, former Basingstoke player and Gazette columnist Ken Harman was a joint winner of the Dorset Open Rapid play competition at Ringwood.
Harman achieved five points and is remembered amongst the Basingstoke chess fraternity for a remarkable eight-year unbeaten run in the area.
