WHITCHURCH United moved to the top of the Wessex League Premier Division with a narrow victory away at Brockenhurst on Saturday.

Danny Phillips’ late goal won the game for the visiting Jam Boys, earning them three points and top spot in the table, having taken 35 points from their first 15 games.

Whitchurch made a good start, going close from a couple of free-kicks, but the hosts then took control, with Jack Garner heading one effort off the line and goalkeeper Brad Snelling making a couple of good saves from Dan Cox.

The second half was more even but the Jam Boys survived a major scare when Mark Barber beat the offside trap, Snelling saving his side with another good save.

Whitchurch grabbed all three points from a corner deep into stoppage time. Jack McCarthy found Phillips in a crowded area and he fired past the Brockenhurst goalkeeper.

Whitchurch will be hoping to maintain their place at the top of the table tomorrow night, when they travel to mid-table Bemerton Heath Harlequins.
