BASINGSTOKE golfer Stuart Archibald’s dreams of joining Justin Rose on the European Tour are over for another year after he failed to reach the Final Qualifying Stage.

The Worting golfer endured mixed fortunes at the second stage of tour school, ultimately missing out on a place at the next stage by two shots.

Playing at Lumine Golf and Beach Club, in Tarragona, Spain, Archibald got off to a great start, an opening round of 67 (-4) putting him inside the top 10.

However, he fell away on day two, failing to make a single birdie as a round of 75 (+4) wiped out all of the good work he had done the previous day.

The 29-year-old needed to play very well in the third round to give himself a chance and he did just that, a six-under-par round of 65 leaving him in a tie for 16th.

With just 18 players making it through to the Final Qualifying Stage next week, Archibald needed to play well again in the closing round – but his hopes were dashed by a series of weather delays.

Despite winds of up to 50mph battering the course on Tuesday, Archibald was one-under-par through 10 holes, but play was then suspended.

The players were sent out again three hours later, but with the wind still high, Archibald made bogeys at holes 11 and 12 before play was suspended for the day.

The wind was still a problem on Wednesday, causing the start of play to be delayed by two hours – and when he did get under way, Archibald found the going tough.

A double bogey at 15 was followed by a bogey at 16 and while he bounced back with a birdie at the final hole, the damage had been done, a final round of 74 (+3) meaning he finished in a tie for 22nd on -3.
