BASINGSTOKE Town manager Jason Bristow was delighted with the manner of his side’s 2-1 win away at Bromley – a result that lifted the Camrose club out of the Blue Square Bet South drop zone.

Two first-half goals from the outstanding Simon Dunn won the game for Town but the joy of victory was somewhat dampened by a serious injury sustained by key defender Ross Adams.

The centre-back fell awkwardly and it was immediately obvious that he was in a bad way. The injury forced a seven-minute stoppage near the end of the first-half, with Adams being taken to hospital in an ambulance with a suspected broken ankle.

Fortunately, that was not the case, but he has damaged ligaments in his left ankle and is awaiting a scan to discover how serious the injury is.

Bristow said: “We knew immediately that it was a bad injury because a player like Ross does not go down screaming like that for nothing. At the moment we’re not sure how bad the damage is but it does not look good and we will miss him.”

Town were leading 1-0 when Adams was forced off – and Bristow was delighted with the way his side responded to adversity, claiming just their second away win of the season.

“It’s a massive win for us and a big performance,” he said. “The manner we have done it in is the really positive thing. Losing Ross was a massive blow but Rob Rice slotted into the centre of defence and did excellently.”

Town had led 2-0 away at Dorchester four days earlier, only to be pegged back for a draw, and the visiting fans must have feared the worst when Bromley pulled a goal back from the penalty spot with 16 minutes to go.

The hosts then had a really good spell, missing several chances to pull level – and Bristow was relieved to see his side hold on for a vital three points.

“When they pulled a goal back, what happened on Tuesday went through my mind,” he admitted. “Bromley got a bit of confidence and once they got one back it was going to be tough.

“The only critical thing I can say today is that it should have been more comfortable because we failed to make the most of some opportunities – but take nothing away from the players. They defended like men and came in deserved winners.”

Basingstoke are in action again tomorrow (kick-off 7.45pm), travelling to Hayes and Yeading United, who parted company with manager Nas Bashir last week and have lost their last three, going down 2-1 at home to bottom side Truro on Saturday.

They sit ninth in the table – but Basingstoke, who are 17th, will go above them should they win at Woking’s Kingfield Stadium, Hayes’ temporary home.

Adams will miss the game but Bristow is hoping that two-goal hero Dunn will be fit despite coming off with a tight hamstring on Saturday.

“We have got to build on the win over Bromley and go on another run,” Bristow added.
