A MAN from Basingstoke has died after a crash on the M3 last night which saw his car leave the carriageway.

The man, in his 30s, was involved in a single-vehicle collision just after 8.20pm on June 17.

He was travelling southbound on the M3 near to junction 5 (Hook) when his vehicle left the carriageway.

The southbound carriageway was shut for several hours overnight between junctions 4a (Fleet) and 5 (Hook) as a result of the crash whilst police officers investigated the incident, with motorists trapped on the motorway.

Now, officers are appealing for witnesses of the incident.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "Officers are making enquiries as to the exact circumstances of the collision and are keen to hear from anyone who can assist them.

"If you witnessed the incident, have any dash cam footage, or would like to talk to us about this incident, please contact us on 101 quoting reference 44210238553."

The spokesperson continued: "We are appealing for witnesses after a man sadly died following a single-vehicle collision on the M3 yesterday (June 17).

"Police were called at 8.21pm to a report of a single-vehicle collision on M3 Southbound Junction 5 (Hook), resulting in a vehicle leaving the carriageway. 

"Sadly, the driver, a man in his 30s from Basingstoke, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

"We would like to thank motorists on the M3 yesterday for their patience whilst officers worked hard to investigate the incident."
