MARWELL ZOO says it needs support "more than ever" after being forced to close again due to the latest lockdown.

Each month, the zoo in Colden Common pays out £220k just to care for its resident animals.

As well as this, the zoo is also paying to carry on its conservation programmes.

The zoo has lost £4m in revenue since March, yet daily costs remain "incredibly high" as it continues to care for its animals "to the highest standard".

A spokesperson for the Marwell Zoo said: "Since March, we’ve lost more than £4m in revenue due to the pandemic and we’re facing our toughest challenge in our nearly 50-year history.

"Please consider supporting us during this difficult time so that future generations can experience the joy of coming to our zoo and make a difference to our conservation projects in the UK and worldwide.

"Every penny adds up and so does our gratitude. Thank you."

An online fundraiser has now been set up to help support the zoo and its work, with £79,932 raised so far.

Marwell Zoo, home to more than 140 species, is owned by Marwell Wildlife, a global conservation charity leading programmes in the UK, Africa and across the world.
