On several social media platforms misinformation is being spread about the selling of poppies this year.

As reported by fullfact.org social media posts are being circulated that read: “I've just heard some really shocking news, The Royal British Legion are not selling poppies in certain areas on Nov 11 this year.

"This is because some minorities say that it will upset them, I say sod off ... The poppy is a symbol of reverence for our fallen heroes of all the wars the BRITISH military have fought in.

"BRITAIN STAND UP AND SAY 'WE WANT THE POPPY SOLD EVERY WERE IN THE UK'. THIS IS OUR RIGHT TO REVERE OUR FALLEN... PLEASE RE-POST”.

The British Legion has responded to this statement and confirmed it is false.

They wrote on twitter: “We're aware that there are statements online suggesting the poppy is not being offered in certain areas of the UK. We'd like to reassure you that this is categorically untrue. We are proud to offer the poppy in every community in the UK — we always have been and always will be.”

The false social media post has resurfaced this year after it was circulated the previous two years and now has over 13,000 shares.
