An Andover teenager certainly wasn't lovin' it after he and two friends were stopped by police after making a 60-mile round trip in search of McDonald's.

Officers in Salisbury conducted routine speed checks in the city on Bank Holiday Monday.

During the checks, a Peugeot 206 was stopped in Castle Road at about 6.30pm after it was caught travelling 48mph in a 30mph limit.

There were three occupants inside the car– the 19-year-old male driver from Andover was reported for speeding and issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice under the Covid-19 rules.

One of the passengers – a 17-year-old boy – was dealt with for possession of a small amount of cannabis.

Sgt Dave Whitby said: “When the three individuals were asked by officers why they were out during current circumstances, they replied that they were looking for a McDonalds that was open. They’d made a 60-mile round trip to do this and they even claimed they weren’t aware of the current restrictions on travel, despite owning smartphones and having access to a television.

“We couldn’t possibly be doing more than we are to advise and educate people of the risk of leaving home unnecessarily. Everyone has to ask themselves if leaving their home is essential and would they be posing a risk to anyone else by doing so.

“It is really disappointing to hear of incidents of this nature and I know all those people within our community who are adhering to the current rules will be frustrated to hear that the minority are continuing to flout the rules.”

Both 17-year-old passengers were returned to their home address by police.
