SOMETIMES it is hard to comprehend the actions of others.

What can possess someone to leave six newly-born kittens buried beneath rubbish near some bins, surely with the expectation that they will die?

As we report on the front page of this week's paper, it was only the sound of the kittens' screeching that led to their rescue.

Charlotte Davey, who works at a nearby curry house in Buckskin, found the kittens cold, small and weak, and took them in.

After they were transferred to the the Happy Cats Rescue centre in Bordon, they found a new home with cat lover Claire Brimele.

Sadly one of the kittens had to be put down, but the rest - Ralph, Lauren, Prada, Chanel and Elle - are on the road to recovery.

The old advert used to remind us that a pet is for life, not just for Christmas.

Owners have a responsibility to look after their animals, and if they cannot cope, they must do the right thing and contact someone who can help.

As Mrs Bimele said: "There's no need for it, there are plenty of places where you can take animals to give them a better chance.

"It would have been better if they had left them on someone's front door."

We thank Charlotte Davey, Claire Brimele and Jo Lucas at Happy Cats Rescue for their efforts in making sure that the kittens make a recovery from their ordeal.
