A POPULAR Basingstoke rugby player bled to death after sustaining an injury caused by a tree branch in the town centre.

Security guards found the body of Christy White, who worked as a tree surgeon, in the early hours of Monday near The Anvil footbridge in Basingstoke town centre.

Detectives from the Major Crime Department at Hampshire Constabulary immediately laun-ched an investigation into the 27-year-old’s death.

While mystery surrounds the exact circumstances that led to Mr White (pictured) sustaining the fatal injury, any suspicion of foul play has been discounted by the police. The case has been closed and passed to the coroner, who will conduct an inquest.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the cause of Mr White’s death was loss of blood after the branch caused a fatal injury to his lower body.

Following the discovery of Mr White’s body, much of the area around The Anvil was sealed off.

Sniffer dogs and forensic teams spent the day scouring the scene and the eastbound carriageway of Churchill Way was also closed for most of Monday.

Peter Edney, media and corporate communications officer for the north and east operational command unit of Hampshire Constabulary, said: “Several lines of inquiry have been pursued and detectives are satisfied there are no suspicious circumstances.”

Mr White, of Morley Road, Viables, Basingstoke, was a popular member of Basingstoke Rugby Football Club and his team-mates have paid tribute to him.

In a statement, they said: “Christy played rugby for Basingstoke through all age groups – minis, juniors, colts and seniors, most recently being a valuable member of the first-team squad. A dominant force on the field, who never took a step backwards, he was a big feature in the back row and always led from the front.

“Off the field, he was known and loved by all, always bringing his infectious laughter to the changing room.”

Mr White began this season with the first XV team, but had to stop playing due to work commitments.

The players’ statement continued: “He was, and will continue to be, a valued member of Basingstoke Rugby Football Club and will be greatly missed, particularly by his team-mates.”

Steve Tristram, chairman of Basingstoke RFC, who last saw Mr White while watching ’Stoke’s match against Cobham on Saturday, said: “The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Christy and his family at this difficult time.”

He added: “Christy was a genuine sportsman and everyone will miss him enormously. He had stopped playing due to work commitments, but I understand he was hoping to start playing again.”

Floral tributes and cards have started to pile up at the scene in Churchill Way. One reads: “Christy, Hope you have found peace. You made Hayley very happy. Thankyou. Love The Tilbrooks xxxx.”
