FOUR additional electrical recycling banks have been installed across the borough this week.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has installed new banks for old electrical equipment at Eastrop Park car park, Abbey Road shops, in Popley, Brighton Hill Shopping Parade, and Central Car Park, in the town centre.

The aim of the banks is to stop people putting old electrical items, which plug in or use batteries, into their grey bins.

These include:

  • kettles, toasters or kitchen appliances
  •  hairdryers, straighteners or curling tongs
  • cameras or photographic equipment
  • music equipment, including radios and MP3 players
  • lamps, heaters or electric blankets
  • computers or games consoles
  • electrical toys, such as remote controlled cars
  •  fairy lights
  • mobile phones

Items which are put in the specialist banks are then sent to be processed, with some materials being recycled into new products.

Larger electrical items, such as televisions or vacuum cleaners, should be taken to the local Household Waste Recycling Centre, in Wade Road, Basingstoke.

Councillor Hayley Eachus, cabinet member for community services and the environment, said: “It is really encouraging that the electrical collection banks are proving so popular and that items residents were previously putting in their grey bins are now being recycled.”
