WHILE many schools stick to traditional sports for PE lessons, The Vyne Community School has branched out to embrace more unusual activities such as archery, taekwondo and cheerleading.

The school, which has previously won the ‘Secondary Sports School of the Year’ award at the annual Basingstoke and Deane Sports Awards, is “punching above its weight” when it comes to sports, according to headteacher Mark Kingswood.

He said: “We are a small school offering a lot more than other small schools and even larger schools.

“We don’t want sports to be just available for sporty students – it is something everyone should be able to take part in.

“Sports such as archery and taekwondo require an enormous amount of mental strength. You need to really put in the time and effort to master those skills.

“Learning these skills can help the students to be patient and learn the value of teamwork. We really take pride in the sports that we offer.”
