Residents of a "silent" area of Basingstoke have reacted in shock as police continue to investigate a double murder.

Two people, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 20s, were found at an address in Buckland Avenue, South Ham, with serious injuries in the early hours of Sunday morning. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 52-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.

It has left the community in shock, with residents telling The Gazette that they haven't seen anything like this in the normal peaceful suburb in the shadow of the Camrose ground.

One resident on Pheby Road, 73-year-old James Storey, said this was out of character for the area.

"I heard there was a double murder," he said, adding that he didn't hear anything on Sunday morning when police came.

"It is shocking around these parts. It is exceptionally quiet, like it is right now."

James, who has lived on the Berg Estate for 14 years, continued: "The only thing I noticed was when I went out on Sunday was that the police cordoned it off and that was a bit unusual. That was it before it was on the news."

Another resident who didn't wish to be named said that she was unaware anything had happened until Monday morning, when her husband text her that the road was closed when he left for work.

"I have lived here since 1988. The only thing I have heard about is an incident at Russell Howard Park," she said.

"There has never ever been anything I have heard about on this estate."

Meanwhile, on the other side of the cordon close to the parade of shops, school worker Sarah Besemer said that she was woken at around 3am by police knocking on her door looking for CCTV.

"I didn't hear anything," she said. "We just heard the police knock on the door at 3 o'clock on Sunday morning.

"They said there had been an incident and asked if we have CCTV.

"I was shocked," the 46-year-old continued. "It is very sad. There are a lot of things that go on further up into South Ham, but to have it near enough just around the corner from here is very sad."

A lot of the residents of the surrounding roads were left in the dark by the sad events of Sunday morning, with many saying that all they knew about what happened was what they saw on the news.

"I don't know anything at all," bank manager Paul Robinson said. He first knew about the incident when he went to get his newspaper on Sunday morning.

"It doesn't worry me in terms of where I am living. It is very quiet.

"I have only been here since November, but I have lived in Basingstoke all my life so I know it is a nice area."

"It is one of those things if they are all known to each other I don't think that is a threat to the neighbourhood," another added.

Meanwhile, 53-year-old Peter Doyle, who lives on adjacent High Drive, added: "I was saying to my wife that you can live on the same street all your life and you move a few miles up the road and something like this happens."

He said his new home of the Berg Estate is a "beautiful" area and that he did not feel unsafe because of the latest incident.
