THE Olympic Torch Relay will begin its short but historic journey through the centre of Basingstoke on July 11 at the bottom of New Road, by the Eastrop Roundabout, at exactly 12.29pm after arriving in convoy from Newbury.

The relay will travel up New Road, turn right on to London Street and Winchester Street before heading down Winchester Road to the Brighton Hill Round-about, where the relay will end at 12.50pm.

Basingstoke and Deane Bor-ough Council staff will be setting up security barriers along the route, behind which spectators can watch the landmark event.

All town centre car parks, with the exception of the Brinkletts Road car park, will be open for the event.

The Winchester Road Round-about is considered to be one of the best places to see the torch relay, though it is hoped crowds will spread out evenly along the route.

The pedestrian area at the Top of The Town is also a prime viewing area, as is the section of Winchester Road which is completely closed to traffic between Pittard Road and the Winchester Road Roundabout.
