Sir.–Over the past year, The Gazette has been following the progress of Tesco’s proposals for a new store on the old Smiths Industries site in Basingstoke.

As one of the local councillors for Grove ward, where Tesco is proposing this store, I would like to restate my support for these proposals.

Tesco’s proposals will bring with them more than 350 local jobs. These jobs will be flexible and benefit many local people in the area, from those seeking fulltime employment to the long-term unemployed.

At this time of economic uncertainty, I believe bringing jobs and investment to Basingstoke to be very important.

In addition to new jobs, Tesco’s proposals will improve the local road network. I feel these improvements will be of lasting benefit to my ward and this part of Basingstoke.

Tesco wants to finance and complete these improvements itself. Without the company’s investment, I can’t see how this calibre of improvement can be achieved in the near future.

–Cllr Steve Day, Liberal Democrat, Grove Ward, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
