STAFF at Basingstoke-based motoring giants The AA gave the town’s Eastrop Park a spring clean on Monday ahead of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

More than 20 staff members were given an hour off to help clean up the open space after a survey revealed more than 60 per cent of drivers want tougher penalties for motor-ing “litter louts”.

Among those who took part in the litter park was AA president Edmund King. He said: “Almost 90 per cent of drivers get angry when other drivers drop litter.

“Most drivers are adamant they are not the cause of litter themselves – with only eight per cent admitting ‘litter guilt’.

“Whoever is to blame, there is no excuse for being a roadside litter lout whose actions can cause danger to other road users and also to those who have to clear up after them.

“Prior to the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations and the Olympics, AA staff and members are determined to do our bit to clean up the streets and parks.”

AA chief executive Andrew Strong also joined staff. Similar litter picks are being organised by other AA staff across the country.
