A MUM is aiming to set up a trust in memory of her son in the hope it will help others who have lost loved ones to suicide.

Around 60 past and present players from Chineham Rugby Club took part in a mini-tournament at Mays Bounty to honour Jonathan Williams, one of their former players.

The 31-year-old gardener and captain of the club 2nd XV was found hanged at his home in Maldive Road, Popley, on June 27, 2010. Unknown to his family, he had suffered a short bout of depression before his death.

The inaugural John Williams Memorial Game saw four teams battle for a trophy, which was presented by Mr Williams’ mother Donna.

She told The Gazette: “It was an amazing day. I was overwhelmed by how many people came back to play in this game, and they all had stories about Jonny.”

Mrs Williams, of Reading Road, Chineham, wants to use the momentum from the game to create a memorial trust in her son’s name to raise awareness of depression in young men and to provide support for mothers in Basing-stoke who have lost children through suicide.

The 55-year-old wrote a speech for the trophy presentation, but found it too upsetting to read.

It read: “As a mum, to lose a child is a tragedy and the pain is unexplainable. But to lose my son to suicide is unbelievably painful as there are so unanswered questions.

“There is no understanding why this lovely, soft, gentle, kind and caring young man, who would pick up and move a creepy crawly, rather than step on it, felt so vulnerable.”

Mrs Williams said she found it difficult to get the right support after her son’s death, and added that setting up a network of mothers in a similar situation would help.

She added: “Talking to other mums is a great relief as they will know exactly how you feel and talk about all the unanswered questions.”
