EMPTY garages on a Basingstoke street have become a haven for flytippers, according to one concerned resident.

Trevor Rose, of South Ham Road, South Ham, said bags of rubbish and electrical goods had been dumped in garages belonging to Sovereign Kingfisher Housing Association.

The 51-year-old said the fly-tipping had become a “nuisance” and called on the housing association to beef up security at its empty garages.

He told The Gazette: “I suspect people just dump stuff around there because it looks like nobody cares about it. Judging by the state of the doors, they (Sovereign) just haven’t bothered to paint them for a while and they seem to be broken into quite easily.”

Mr Rose has contacted Sovereign Kingfisher in the hope bosses will take steps to alleviate the problem. He has also written to Basingstoke MP Maria Miller.

“It has definitely got worse in recent months,” said Mr Rose. “Fly-tipping and dumping just attracts even more of the same. It is a problem that will only get worse unless something is done.”

Roy Probert, public relations manager at Sovereign Kingfisher, said: “We were naturally disappointed to learn from Mr Rose about fly-tipping in the garage area at the rear of Worting Road.

“Sovereign takes such complaints seriously and will clear rubbish from land it owns promptly. We have been liaising with Mr Rose and we understand that the rubbish has now been removed and the garages secured. We would, however, be interested to receive any information about people fly-tipping on our land. Residents can contact us on 0800 988 4858 or 01256 464114.”
