A FUNDRAISER in memory of a popular teenager, who died after being knocked down on her way to school, is being organised by her fellow pupils.

Louise Eames, who attended Costello Technology College, suffered fatal injuries in a road accident in London Road, Eastrop, in February.

The 14-year-old, of Romsey Close, Popley, Basingstoke, suffered what proved to be a fatal head injury when she was involved in a collision with a Volkswagon Passat in February. She was taken to Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital by air ambulance but died a fortnight later.

A group of Year 8 pupils, led by Georgia Forsyth, of Thornhill Way, Chineham, are now hosting a 12-hour “Sportathon” at the school, in Crossborough Hill, where pupils and their families can get sponsored to take part in a range of activities such as football, cricket and table tennis.

Organisers hope it will also raise awareness of the need for additional road safety measures around the school.

Money raised from the event, which will be held on October 15, will go to the John Radcliffe hospital.

Georgia said: “I have always wanted to do something for charity and when I heard what happened to Louise, this felt like the right time to give something back to a good cause – like the John Radcliffe – as a way to say ‘thank you’.

“While she was a few years older than me, what happened to Louise affected the whole school. I did speak to her and everyone spoke highly of her.”

Georgia added she has already raised around £300 through sponsorship and hopes to raise plenty more on the day.

Speaking about the pupils, headteacher Julia Mortimore said: “I am very proud of them. They feel so strongly about a cause which means so much to all of us.

“The accident was devastating and affected the whole community.

“It is nice to see something positive coming out of all this.”

Mrs Mortimore added: “There’s been a lot of concern about road safety in the area so if this could raise some awareness of that as well, it would be very worthwhile.”
