A COMMUNITY has launched a campaign to cut its carbon emissions.

At the weekend, residents popped along to the launch of Greening Tadley – a new community-led campaign which aims to help people reduce their CO2 emissions and save money.

There were demonstrations, stalls, music, and refreshments at the launch and awareness event, which took place at the Ambrose Allen Centre, in Franklin Avenue, Tadley.

There was also an opportunity to get creative by decorating a T-shirt, hat or bag with materials supplied for free, and a prize was given for the best design.

The launch event was held to encourage residents to take part in the campaign.

Every household in Tadley should have received a challenge card through their letterbox from Tadley Town Council with a list of easy ways to save energy and money in the home, such as turning off taps while brushing one’s teeth, turning off lights when leaving a room or walking or cycling for journeys of less than a mile.

The aim is to put into action at least five of the challenges and to display the card in a front window between October 15 and 31.

The cards will then be counted and the annual CO2 and financial savings for the community will be estimated.

Councillor Jo Slimin, chairman of Tadley Town Council, said: “Our residents are aware that climate change now affects us all but are not always sure what they can do to help.

“We thought it was time we showed how by acting together. Some small changes we can all make will make a big difference.”

Members of Tadley’s Youth Council were also on hand to help out and were hoping to get as many youngsters as possible to sign up to help the eco-friendly cause.

Chairman Jack Hayward, of Coppice Close, Baughurst, told The Gazette: “We want to make kids aware of what they can do to help combat climate change, and get them thinking about how they can help.”
