KEEN historians and culture vultures can visit Hampshire historic and cultural treasures for free during a four-day mass opening event.

Every year, Heritage Open Days (HODs) celebrate England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors access to properties that are either usually closed to the public, or would normally charge an entrance fee.

This year, the open days run from tomorrow until Sunday.

Organised by volunteers – usually property owners or managers – HODs also include tours and activities. Nationally, the event is co-ordinated by English Heritage.

Properties that are involved in north Hampshire include Pamber Priory Church, in Ramsdell Road, Pamber End, which was originally consecrated in 1128, and Grade I listed Silchester Parish Church, in Church Lane, which will have displays, organ music and other attractions.

Basing House will open its doors and in Basingstoke itself, St Michael’s Church and St Michael’s Church Cottage – both in Church Square – will be opening up for visitors to celebrate their rich heritage.

This year, the church is celebrating 500 years since a Tudor rebuild and there will be displays, tower tours, musical interludes and activities for children.

Other properties involved in the event include the 17th century Granary in Minchens Lane, Bramley, and Grade II listed Worting House, in Church Lane, which is open between 10am and 3pm tomorrow only.

Both All Saints’ Church and The Pest House, in The Bury, Odiham, and The Cross Barn, at Palace Gate Farm, Odiham, will be open on Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.

Dr Simon Thurley, chief executive of English Heritage, said: “Heritage Open Days is about people and places – the event celebrates community and reflects the importance of the built environment in our lives and to our quality of life.

“It is organised by local people who dedicate their spare time to opening properties and staging activities, and it is their knowledge and enthusiasm that makes Heritage Open Days happen.”

The days and times at which properties open varies.
