CYCLISTS are being asked to get on their bikes for one of north Hampshire’s most worthy causes.

Basingstoke’s St Michael’s Hospice needs people to sign up, get sponsored and hit the saddle for this summer’s Big Wheel 16 Bike Ride to help keep its services on track.

Three rides start and finish at the Down Grange Sports Complex, Basingstoke, on Sunday, July 18, with timed starts between 9am and 10.30am.

St Michael’s Hospice events co-ordinator Pat Darty said: “Big Wheel is a great day out for families and keen cyclists alike – and it’s a great way to get fit and healthy whilst supporting a great local cause.

“Last year, we had over 1,100 cyclists take part in this event and we are hoping to get even more this year to raise vital funds for St Michael’s.”

So far, more than 150 people have put their names down for one of three brand new routes snaking through the beautiful north Hampshire countryside – one of five miles, another of 25 miles and the most challenging of 50 miles.

Food and drink is on offer from Basingstoke Rugby Football Club, as well as a relaxing free leg massage from the hospice’s complementary therapy team.

This year’s event sponsor is Basingstoke-based firm Computer 2000. Entry costs £15 per adult, £7.50 per child, £40 for two adults and two children, and £25 for a tandem bike entry.

Cyclists are also urged to register early and save money as on the day registration fees will be £20 for adults and £10 for children.
