THE organisers of one of Basingstoke’s biggest participation events have made a final plea for more women to get on board.

Race for Life still has room for more than 1,000 entrants to the two events taking place at Down Grange this year to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

So far, 3,000 women have signed up for the 5km race, which begins at 11am on June 20, but organisers are still hoping at least 4,000 will take part.

And the 10km race, which starts at 10am on June 19, also has room for more women because only 800 have signed up so far and the target is 1,000.

Basingstoke event organiser Rachel White said: “It’s not too late to get involved. Please do sign up.

“It will be a fantastic day at either event. The more people we can get, the better.

“It’s all about a sea of pink, so the more ladies we can get, the bigger the sea of pink will be.”

In previous years, 5,000 females have walked, jogged and slogged around the course, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds.

To hit their fundraising target of £314,000 this year, the organisers need a full turnout.

Mrs White said: “Every single penny of sponsorship raised goes directly towards research which is vital.

“Evidence has shown that over the past 30 years, a lot of progress has been made. This money is vital to ensuring we continue making progress.

“Cancer affects virtually everyone so we need to bring this money in to make a difference. The money goes towards research into all types of cancer.”

The organisers also need volunteers to help with marshalling, administration and giving out medals, goody bags and water at the end.

Mrs White said: “So many guys say they want to get involved.

“This is a perfect way to get involved, not only supporting your wife, girlfriend, sister or mother, but also by volunteering.”
