WOMEN of all ages, shapes and sizes are being encouraged to sign up quickly for what is usually Basingstoke’s biggest participation event.

Race for Life, raising money for Cancer Research UK, will take place at Down Grange on June 19 and 20.

But this year organisers fear low turnout may jeopardise its success because only 3,000 women have signed up so far. In previous years, 5,000 women have, walked, jogged and slogged around the course, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Rachel White, Basingstoke event manager, said: “We are concerned that places in this year’s event have been slow to fill, whereas spots in other events around the UK have been snapped up quickly.

“It could be that many women have simply forgotten to enter this year or, having completed the 5k event, don’t feel the need to take part again.

“But we need to remind these women just how important their contribution is. One in three people are diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives and research is very expensive. The only way we can beat the disease is with their help.”

The Basingstoke Race for Life at the sports complex, off Pack Lane, Basingstoke, is one of 29 in the country where women have the chance to take part in five or 10 kilometre runs.

The 10km event is on June 19 at 10am and the 5km is on June 20 at 11am. The organisers are hoping to hit a fundraising target of £314,000, but they will need a full turn-out.

Mrs White said: “Race for Life is not a competitive event. It’s all about women of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels coming together to share amazing moments and help beat cancer.

“Many women are put off entering Race for Life because they think they won’t be able to complete the route. But we know that women often cover several kilometres on an average shopping trip.”

Cancer Research UK supports scientists, doctors and nurses dedicated to curing, understanding and preventing the disease, including clinical trials such as one in Basingstoke into after-care for patients treated for pancreatic cancer.
