A “NATURE” warden has been given a ground-breaking role at a popular north Hampshire visitor attraction – and she will be tasked with monitoring butterflies and bats as well operating chainsaws and tractors.

Heather Fisher has become the first Community Warden for the National Trust property, The Vyne, in Sherborne St John.

She will work with residents, schools, colleges and local businesses to protect and conserve the historic parkland.

Her work will include getting students to come to the estate to cut birch wood that will hopefully be sold to Newbury Racecourse for their brush fences.

Next week, she will be organising wildlife days at The Vyne, which will include evening guided walks, wildlife treasure hunts in the garden and activity workshops.

Heather said: “Community wardens are the public face of the trust in the countryside and a vital link with the local population.

“The very fact that this position has been created is a sign that the charity recognises the need to enthuse and educate people about the wonderful countryside on their doorstep.

“Community Wardens such as myself need to work with the public to restore our native wildlife habitats and prevent the further loss of precious flora and fauna.”

The wildlife days run from run from August 17 to 19. For more information, contact The Vyne on 01256 883858.
