A COUPLE are looking for answers after their son died in Basingstoke in mysterious circumstances.

Simon Chivers, of Sandys Road, in Worting, Basingstoke, died in his sleep at a friend’s house, in Paddock Road, South Ham, on Bank Holiday Monday, May 25.

His mother Stephanie said a post- mortem on her 23-year-old fitness fanatic son had proved inconclusive.

Now, Mrs Chivers, of Chivers Close, in Worting, is desperately waiting for an inquest to find out what happened to the son, whom she admits had a chequered past.

The 44-year-old said: “It’s just a horrible feeling. We’ve been told that while he was asleep, he stopped breathing, his lips went blue and someone called an ambulance.

“I went round while the paramedic was there and he said his heart had stopped.

“Earlier in the week, he had complained of chest pains. We just want answers.”

Mrs Chivers admits her son spent time in jail for violence, but said he was always ready to stick up for someone.

She said: “He was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and left school at 12. He was failed by the school and the local education authority.

“I think that played a part in why he got into trouble.”

Simon was the eldest of seven children. He visited the gym every day and was a striker for Overton United.

His father Keith, 45, said: “Come rain or shine, we would be there to watch him play. He loved sport. I can remember going fishing with him and as he cast out, he managed to catch a bird that was flying by.

“He loved animals and carefully unhooked the bird. We’ll miss him very much.”

The Hammer and Tongs, The Beacon and The Buckskin public houses shut voluntarily on the advice of police on June 4, when Simon’s funeral took place.

An inquest will take place in Basingstoke on July 29.
