People with tinnitus are invited to a special Basingstoke Tinnitus Support Group meeting in September, featuring an expert talk on sleep.

Peter Humphreys, chair of the group, said: "Good sleep is hugely important and the biggest issue for those with tinnitus.

"We are very pleased to welcome Dr Lindsay Browning, who holds a PhD in insomnia from Oxford University, as the guest speaker at the next Tinnitus Group meeting at 7.30pm on September 9 in central Basingstoke."

Tinnitus is hearing sounds such as ringing, buzzing, hissing or whistling without an external source.

Tinnitus is estimated to affect about one in seven adults and one in 30 children.

For some, tinnitus is a minor annoyance; for others, it can disrupt everyday life.

It is often linked to anxiety, depression, stress, isolation and poor sleep.

Poor sleep can worsen concentration and mood, creating a hard-to-break cycle.

Tinnitus is common, but there is no recognised cure.

Support groups can help people manage the condition.

Meeting people who understand tinnitus can ease isolation and provide practical advice and coping strategies.

The Basingstoke Tinnitus Support Group was founded five years ago to help people across North Hampshire.

The group meets monthly, alternating between in-person events with guest speakers and members-only online “share and care” sessions.

The confidential online meetings let members share experiences, discuss concerns and support one another.

Members can bring a spouse, partner or friend to in-person meetings.

Membership and meetings are free.

The group relies on donations and grants and is affiliated with Tinnitus UK.

It is also listed on the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust website and belongs to Basingstoke Voluntary Action and the Basingstoke and District Disability Forum.

Anyone interested in the September meeting or joining can contact Basingstoke Voluntary Action on 01256 423816, leaving their name and details for the group.

New members are welcome.

A survey of 2,600 people by the British Tinnitus Association found that 9.3 per cent had experienced suicidal thoughts or thoughts of self-harm in the previous two years.

Basingstoke Silver Band flies the flag for Basingstoke at Bandamonium Festival Devon

Basingstoke Silver Band represented the town at Bandamonium in Devon, one of the UK’s biggest brass-band celebrations.

The band joined hundreds of musicians from across the country for free performances in towns and villages across Okehampton before taking part in a massed-bands finale featuring 30 bands and more than 600 musicians.

For the Basingstoke musicians, the weekend became about more than music.

Audiences applauded, strangers became friends and musicians of every level came together to celebrate their shared love of music.

Musical director Bekki said: "So many people stopped me throughout the weekend to tell me how much they had enjoyed listening to us.

"One couple said they could actually see the kindness and enjoyment within our band through the way we played.

"That, to me, is Basingstoke Silver Band at its very best."

After more than 128 years, Basingstoke Silver Band still brings live music to Hampshire and offers an affordable, inclusive way to enjoy brass banding.

After a weekend celebrating community music, the band hopes more local people will join its next chapter.

Whether you are returning to brass after years away or picking up an instrument for the first time, you are welcome.
