The Vyne Community School artwork on display at station

The creative pieces by Years 8 and 9 students from Vyne Community School are brightening the waiting rooms on platforms one and four at the town's railway station, curated by The Arts Society Basingstoke.

The work will remain on view until the beginning of July.

Stephen Wey, art teacher at Vyne Community School, said: "It’s a good incentive and they have risen to the occasion."

The Year 8 students' contributions take inspiration from Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Their pieces imagine fantastical, towering buildings set against bold, textured skies.

To create the dreamy backdrops, students experimented with wax relief techniques before using oil pastels, paint and other media to complete their final work.

Other pupils explored the art of enlarging images using grid techniques, scaling up drawings of popular characters to practice proportion and media control.

Each student developed their own background to personalise their piece.

The display also includes self-portraits by Year 9 students, who began by exploring the self portraits of Freda Kahlo and L.S. Lowry to learn about facial proportions before creating their own.

Each of the young artists reflected on the encouragement and support from teachers and classmates that helped them achieve this milestone.

Sophia said: "I feel very happy that my artwork has been put up at the train station.

"I was encouraged by my art teacher who had a lot of faith in me in encouraging me to use my skills wisely.

"This has made me think that I could take it as a GCSE subject, due to my lovely caring teachers."

Leila said: "I think that it is a great opportunity for our artwork to be on display for hundreds of people."

Many pupils described seeing their work on public display as a proud and motivating experience.

Mati said: "I feel so proud of myself that my artwork is in the station.

"I have worked so hard on this piece of work with the help of my teachers and motivation from my friends.

"I have managed to create something that I will forever be so proud of."

At the beginning of July, artwork from the Austen Academy will replace the current display.

Passengers are encouraged to stop by and enjoy the exhibition while travelling through the station.
