A volunteer described as “the person who makes everything feel like it’s going to be fine” has been recognised with an Above and Beyond award in Basingstoke.

Matt Woods was honoured at the A Place to be Proud of Awards for his tireless work across a number of local charities, giving his time consistently and without payment.

He volunteers at the Café Project’s Orchard Café, serves as a trustee for the Basingstoke and District Disability Forum, supports the Pink Place Cancer Charity, and regularly helps at reception at Basingstoke Voluntary Action, as well as attending its events throughout the year.

Judges said it was not just the volume of his work that stood out, but the way he carries it out — always early, always smiling, and always ready to help.

At the Pink Place, he sets up events, encourages participation and brings what those around him describe as an “infectious” energy.

For organisations supporting vulnerable people, judges noted that his warmth and reliability are as valuable as the practical help he provides.

In a highly competitive category, Matt was recognised not for a single standout moment, but for his unwavering commitment to others.

The other category finalists were:

Chris Clarke-Williams

JM Cleaning

Lynn Pullen
