Basingstoke MP's plan for the town after the King's Speech

Luke Murphy, MP for Basingstoke, has backed the Government’s latest legislative agenda following the King’s Speech on May 13.

He said the wide-ranging programme, which included measures for NHS access, housing, water, transport and safer streets has the potential to deliver practical improvements for people in Basingstoke.

Mr Murphy said his job for the new Parliamentary session will be to make sure this national reform translates into visible improvements locally, including better access to GP services, stronger support for children and families, safer streets, stronger rights for renters and leaseholders, cleaner rivers, and support for Basingstoke’s local economy.

He said: "People in Basingstoke want to see government focused on the issues that affect their everyday lives.

"That means being able to get a GP appointment when they need one, feeling safe in their community, bringing down bills, improving housing, and making sure every child gets the best possible start in life.

“I will continue pushing the Government to go further and faster where that is needed for Basingstoke."

He described the Energy Independence Bill as vital for protecting households from unpredictable fossil fuel prices and promoting new jobs in the clean energy sector.

He said: "The Energy Independence Bill will help protect households in Basingstoke from the shock of volatile overseas fossil fuel prices, while also creating skilled jobs in the industries of the future.

"That builds on the fantastic work already being done locally by companies like InstaVolt and education providers like Basingstoke College of Technology to develop clean technology skills and jobs."

He also pledged to examine the NHS Modernisation Bill as it passes through Parliament, drawing on feedback from Basingstoke residents, patients, and healthcare staff.

Mr Murphy also welcomed the Education for All Bill, which he said aims to ensure every child has the chance to fulfil their potential regardless of background.

He said education and SEND provision are among the most common issues raised with him by Basingstoke families.

Other legislative priorities in the King’s Speech include the Clean Water Bill, which is particularly relevant to Basingstoke amid ongoing concerns about sewage discharges and water quality in the River Loddon.

Mr Murphy also welcomed the proposed Commonhold and Leaseholders’ Rights Bill, citing complaints from residents about poor management, high service charges, and limited accountability in flats and managed estates.
