Village halls are being celebrated for their role in supporting community health and wellbeing across Hampshire.

The Village Halls Week campaign, running from March 16 to 22, highlights the positive impact of community spaces on both physical and mental health.

Created by Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE), this year’s campaign focuses on health and wellbeing.

Action Hampshire, which supports charities and non-profit groups such as community and village halls, is backing the campaign and emphasising the important role of village halls.

Kevin Sawers, project lead for community buildings at Action Hampshire, said: "Community centres and village halls are inclusive and welcoming spaces which offer the community a whole host of opportunities to improve their mental and physical health, helping people to meet the NHS’ 5 Steps to health and wellbeing."

At the Roger Morris Centre in Basingstoke, Luan Squire and her team offer Tovertafel sessions for those with dementia to encourage physical movement.

Other services include a Sight Loss Café, free blood pressure checks, and Weigh and Play sessions for parents with babies.

Mr Sawers said: "We’re delighted to support Village Halls Week this year.

"Community halls and similar venues are vital for so many people who may experience barriers when it comes to taking care of their health."
