Bumper home crowd help Basingstoke claim win over Bognor RFC

An early double from Oscar Worsfold set the tone, before a debut try from Matt Wise and five vital points from Will Green’s boot secured four crucial league points on Burns Night.

Counties 1 Hampshire continues to prove one of the tightest leagues in the country, with the top five separated by just six points and promotion likely limited to a single place.

With defeat potentially leaving Basingstoke 11 points adrift, the club called on its members to pack the stand and act as the sixteenth man.

Boosted by a sold-out Burns Supper, supporters turned out in force despite the weather.

The crowd were rewarded instantly. From the kick-off, Alfie Rowley broke through midfield before delivering a superb, floated pass into the hands of Oscar Worsfold, who showed electric pace to score in the corner inside 45 seconds.

Will Green’s conversion drifted wide in the strong crosswind, leaving the score at 5-0.

Worsfold doubled his tally five minutes later in remarkable fashion.

A Bognor tap penalty from their own five-metre line ended in a knock-on inside the 22, the ball falling kindly for Worsfold to sprint clear and score in the same corner, pushing ’Stoke 10-0 ahead.

Bognor responded by showing why they top the table.

Their back row carried powerfully while their pace out wide caused problems, nearly producing a stunning 60-metre kick-and-chase try, only for a knock-on to deny them.

They soon crossed in the right-hand corner to open their account.

Captain Rowley missed a chance to extend the lead with a penalty, and Bognor capitalised.

After kicking to the corner, they used their set piece and phases to create space out wide and score again.

Despite enjoying territory late in the half, ’Stoke were forced into last-ditch defence, full back Drew Paterson proved to be Mr Dependable in defence, with a big shot forcing a knock-on and saving five certain points.

Bognor, however, struck again on the half-time whistle from a quick tap penalty to take the lead.

The introduction of Adam Richards and Simon Appleby added real impetus to the Basingstoke pack.

Oscar Rowley made ground through midfield before Appleby, Steve Ansell and Matt Mairs drove ’Stoke to within five metres.

Keeping the ball tight, debutant Matt Wise burrowed over to the right of the posts for his first ’Stoke try, with Green converting to make it 17-15.

Basingstoke’s defence then took centre stage. Penalties allowed Bognor territory, and a successful kick nudged the visitors back in front by a point.

As the rain intensified, ’Stoke played intelligently, kicking well and forcing errors.

After a forward pass halted an Appleby line break, the dominant ’Stoke pack sensed their moment, winning a scrum penalty.

Rowley opted for goal, and the 18-year-old Green calmly slotted the kick despite the conditions, sending the home crowd into raptures.

With 20 minutes remaining, Bognor threw everything at the home defence.

Key moments included a Luke Wareham line-out steal, a huge ball-and-all tackle from Appleby and an Oscar Rowley counter-ruck turnover.

Alfie Rowley’s grubber kicks kept Bognor pinned back late on, and after a final scramble ended with a Bognor kick into touch, the referee blew for full time.

What followed was a special moment, as players, coaches and supporters celebrated together at Down Grange, acknowledging the crowd’s role in a memorable victory.
